Who By Fire

The family artifact I used to guide me and keep me honest in this novel was a hand-written diary covered in tight small handwriting (my father’s and mother’s handwriting). In the novel, the Ryders have made such a diary and the kids call it the Stink Diary: a record, by date, of all the bad days and nights: the hired men that quit because of the stink, the piglets that died, the night sicknesses of the children. Several of the severe pollution occurrences in my novel are directly taken from this diary. If anyone questions the authenticity or even the possibility of the events in the novel, I have the fifty-five year old Stink Diary at hand as the ultimate proof.
